A GIANT SHARK  MURAL FOR A 7 YEAR OLD!

BEWARE OF SHARKS IN  ATLANTA GEORGIA!

A dear client and friend who lives in Atlanta Georgia, called me to come to her home and do another mural for her.  I was excited because this family has a beautiful home and guest house where I am privileged to stay while I do murals for them.
Her 7 year old son wanted a GIANT REALISTIC shark painted on his bedroom wall!  He just LOVES sharks!
I was a bit concerned that it would be a frightening beast for him to see if he woke in the middle of the night.  So, I questioned her about the “fright” possibility and she said that he was not afraid.
When I arrived to their home , the 7 years old was so excited.  He had the photos ready for me and told me exactly what he wanted and how he wanted it.  He even helped me paint some of the ocean on the final day.

This was a very interesting mural job for a child’s room, I must say!  It was fun and I am thrilled that my client is pleased with his mural.

Here we are almost complete.  We had to take  almost everything out for “Jaws” to move in.  The whole room was painted a butter yellow as a background colour and the bedding and accessories are all blue and white with a nautical theme.

MAYBE YOU WOULD LIKE A WHIMSICAL ISLAND THEME ON YOUR WALL

Or…PERHAPS YOU WOULD LIKE AN EVENING IN HAWAII FOR YOUR MASTER BATH OR GUEST HOUSE OR POOL BATHROOM.

ADDISON MIZNER IS NOT DEAD! HE WAS SEEN AT WALMART YESTERDAY!

This is a home in South Florida who wanted me to create the “distressed” and authentic look of the Mizner Hand Painted Ceilings.

This project was a very fun project for me!  I stepped into the mind and spirit of Mizner.  In my dreams I went back in time to the 1920’s and interlocked my spirit with Mizner in Palm Beach.
Not only was I 40 feet in the air over Jerusalem Stone Floors, but I was Harnessed to the scaffolding in order to paint for hours with my arms over my head.  The results were worth it.  It has always served me well that I am not afraid of heights…Lol!

Seeing the client pleased at receiving exactly what they had in their mind, is priceless to me.  It is a challenge I enjoy, to step into the imagination of the client and create their vision.

What vision do you have for the spaces you are working on at the moment?  If there is a way that I can help bring that vision to life, it would be my pleasure to hear from you.

10,000 HOURS

NO COLOUR WHEELS!

One of my students accused me of being the “Mommie Dearest” of art classes! lol!  I say “NO COLOUR WHEELS!”   I don’t want students relying on a colour wheel.  You have to PRACTICE mixing colour to know what colours make what.

There is a scientist who has a theory that it takes someone 10,000 hours of practice to master a skill.  I tend to agree.

If you rely on a colour wheel to tell you how to mix a colour, you never learn and you will not be a real artist who KNOWS how to mix colour.  Colour theory is a real skill.

Music is the same, as I suppose a lot of skills are.  You must KNOW your notes and how to read your notes by heart.  If you rely on a keyboard scale or write in your notes on the staff of your music, you will never know them by sight, and you will never be able to read music.

One must go in there, and learn by doing, over and over again.  Then one day, it will come as if by magic.  You will know how by heart.  It will be like second nature.

If we HEAR something, we tend to forget it, if we SEE something we tend to remember it, but if we DO something WE KNOW IT!

Get in your studio and start with your primary colours, and make your own chart, see what amount of red in yellow makes the orange you are looking for and do this with every colour until you have a good idea, what colour mixed with the others makes what.

Practice, practice, practice.  There are pretty much no short cuts if you really want to learn something.

BEAM ME UP SCOTTIE!

IF YOU TRULY KNOW HOW TO DRAW AND PAINT, YOU CAN PAINT ANY SUBJECT MATTER AND BE COMFORTABLE DOING IT.

YOUR WISH IS MY DESIRE.

A client, you also happens to be a dear friend, called and asked if I could paint one of the Star Trek space ships.  He was renovating his in-home theatre room and wanted a Star Trek Theme.
I forgot the exact name of this particular star ship, (you Trekkies out there will know the one), it is one of the newer ones.  He told me of his new project, which was this Space Ship to be painted as if he were looking out of the viewing window of his own Space Ship, into deep space, at this newer spectacular Space Ship.
I had not painted deep space before, nor had I even painted a Star Ship Enterprise!  However, it was quite fun and there were design challenges I had to solve.  One of the challenges was the large immobile cabinet which held special equipment for movies and sound. I had to “skinny” a ladder in between the cabinet and the wall that I needed to paint.  Then the question was how to get in there and paint!  (Gymnastics were employed, …  wish I had a video to watch the re-runs of that scene! lol)
(The Star Ship Mural was the first step in his renovations, so these photos still have drop cloths on the floor and painting “stuff”.)

As with every new commission, I learned all kinds of wonderful things.

I had to acquire photos of Quazars, and Black Holes, and Milky Ways.  Charting out where and how to paint them into deep space…
which is B-L-A-C-K!  …..But, is it?????

Want to know what colours make deep space?  Email me and I will give you a painting tip about how this was accomplished:  talin@talinsstudio.com

Close up of a Quazar.

Another design challenge was how to realistically paint thousands of stars without it looking “Hockey”.
If you would like to find out how, email me, and I will give you a few clues.   talin@talinsstudio.com

YOU HAVE TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT A LOT!

As an artist, you have to know a LOT about a LOT of things.

To be a truly great artist, your knowledge has to be more than one dimensional.  One must know a LOT about a lot of things!  How things grow, how they are made, how they are built, structural and mechanical knowledge, anatomy of humans, animals, insects, as well as botanical knowledge.  One must know about people, a little psychology, feelings, body language, visual cues. Symbolism of colours and subject matter.  Historical references and meanings…THEN, you must know your tools and how to use them properly, tones, shading, colour theory, composition, perspective, scale, dimension, ….. And, the list goes ON AND ON!!! (I know you are not supposed to begin a sentence with “and”.)
As an artist, you must be a consistent “detective”, you must constantly be observing and educating yourself and studying your subject matter, or objects.  To truly capture the ESSENCE of what you are sketching or painting, one must really know how it works, the structure and all of the details about the THING.
This attention and observation is the difference between a great artist and a so-so artist.  No one ever “arrives”,  EVERYONE,  with no exceptions, must practice and continue to study throughout their whole lives.  This will not only make your work better and better, but it will also keep your mind healthy, and ageless, which in turn keeps your body youthful and healthy as well.
Come and practice and learn new techniques with me, Talin, at my Adult Saturday Class from 10am-12.

YOU CAN’T HELP WHAT YOU LOVE.

Tropical Splendor Fabric

Have you ever noticed that you always go for the “things” you always go for?  Over and over again???  Maybe with a bit different spin, but always the same thing?

Coral, aqua, landscape scenes, leaves, scrollwork, fresco, ….classic subject matters.  These are the things I love to work with.  This is just one of the designs I use in fabrics for interiors as well as for apparel.  Originally, it is a10’x5′ Oil painting, but I love the feel of it.

What subject matter do you find yourself drawn to, over and over again?  I find that I am consistently attracted to the same subjects throughout my life.  They may be interpreted in a different way, or compositions change, colours change, scale may even change.  But…those same things continue to mesmerize!

Write me and tell me what your favorite things are!  Tell me how they make you feel and why!

REINVENTING A DISCO DESIGN.

REINVENTING A DISCO DESIGN.

My client brought two mauve and black very large lamps to me and asked me to “DO SOMETHING WITH THESE!”  The colours were atrocious, and they were gaudy and ghastly.  BUT, the “bones” were there.  They could be something “beachy” and coastal for their beach home.
So, I rushed the large well made shades to the upholstery people who also happen to do lamp shades.  I gave them my hibiscus fabric and it’s coordinate and asked them to do a nice shade with my fabric.
Then I brought the lamp  bases home, and did several coats of a special enamel paint to make a new white glossy finish.  I painted my hibiscus fabric design on them and flew back to the upholstery shop to pick up the shades.
The results were really really nice!  I only had time to take a quick photo of the lamp on the pavement before rushing them over to the client.  I am hoping the client will take a photo of the lamps in the room over looking the ocean.  The room is all white with accents of my hibiscus fabric on pillows, two upholstered chairs, and these lamps.

What project do you have that may need to re-invent something “disco”? lol!
Call for a free consultation with me to see how I may create something fun for your next project.
